How to Make a 5X7 Acrylic Box
How to Make a 5X7 Acrylic Box
Acrylic box construction is easy with the appropriate tools to ensure edges are perpendicular and sides are securely connected with specialty solvent and glue. Creating a simple 5"x7'open box for recipe cards as an initial project provides the foundation for larger or more complex acrylic projects. Larger sheets of acrylic will require more sophisticated holders such as clamps to avoid warping the sheets. Acrylic glue takes time to cure and to dry, so be sure to plan adequate time to complete your project in phases.
Instructions
1. Gently sand the short sides and one long side of two rectangular acrylic sheets. Gently sand three sides of the two acrylic squares.
If applicable, peel away the sides that were sanded to prepare for gluing.
2. Lay one rectangular sheet flat. Position a sanded side of one square sheet perpendicular to the short (sanded) end of the rectangle. If desired, use an Lshaped ruler to check that the connected pieces are perpendicular.Apply the acrylic solvent and glue to the edges to be connected and tape the two pieces to hold in place. Place a wooden block on each side of the upright square to maintain its position (if desired, recheck that the pieces are perpendicular with the L-shaped ruler).
3. Repeat step 2 with the second sanded rectangular sheet and the second square sheet.
Allow the halves of the box to dry for 24 to 48 hours, according to the directions of the acrylic glue.
4. Remove the wooden blocks and position the two glued halves of the box together to form a rectangle: the acrylic sheets will be able to stand up vertically on your work surface. Make sure the unsanded edges are facing down (i.e., sanded edges are facing up, to attach the acrylic bottom).
If desired, check that the sections are perpendicular, using the L-shaped ruler.
Apply the acrylic solvent and glue to the edges to be connected. Tape the sides to hold in place. Place a wooden block on each side to hold the sides firmly in place.
5. Apply the acrylic solvent and glue to the top edges of the box. Carefully position the third rectangular sheet on top of the box, making sure all corners are aligned (top sheet and side sheets).
Tape the top to the sides to hold it in place.
If desired, place a wooden block on top of the acrylic sheet, taking care that it is not too heavy and that it will hold the sheet in place.
6. Allow the box to dry for 24 to 48 hours, according to the directions of the acrylic glue. Remove the wooden blocks and carefully remove the masking tape.
If applicable, remove the protective paper from all sides and turn the acrylic box over (open side is up) to inspect the finished box.
Tips & Warnings
Consider affixing hinges and a top sheet that is at least 5.5"x7.25" in size to create a top for your box.
Use protective gloves when handling acrylic solvents and glue.
